LIMA, June 30. /Dunyo IA/. Keiko Fujimori, the candidate from the conservative party Popular Force and daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, has won Peru’s presidential election with 50.14% of the vote, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing “Bloomberg.”
Her main rival, left-wing Together for Peru candidate Roberto Sánchez, received 49.87% of the vote. The margin between the candidates was approximately 49,600 votes.
The 51-year-old Keiko Fujimori thanked the National Jury of Elections for its vote count and said she is awaiting the official confirmation of the results, scheduled for July 3.
The presidential election’s first round was held on April 12, followed by a runoff on June 7. If the results are formally confirmed, Keiko Fujimori will be inaugurated on July 28 for a five-year term, becoming the first woman to hold the presidency of Peru. This marks her fourth attempt to win the presidency.
The election took place amid rising crime and political instability, which has seen Peru change eight presidents over the past decade. The most recent president, José Jerí, was impeached by parliament through a vote of no confidence. Voter turnout exceeded 18 million out of nearly 35 million eligible voters.
The new president is the daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, who led Peru from 1990 to 2000. After being removed from office, he was convicted of abuse of power, corruption, and crimes against humanity. In 2023, Peru’s Constitutional Court reinstated his pardon, and he died in 2024 at the age of 86.
