China outlines its position on the UN Secretary-General election during a meeting with a potential candidate

BEIJING, June 5. /Dunyo IA/.  China has announced its intention to actively participate in the selection process of the next UN Secretary-General and to support efforts to strengthen the role of the global organization, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing with “Xinhua News Agency”.

This was stated by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a meeting with former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, who is considered among the potential candidates for the post of UN chief.

According to the diplomat, Beijing will maintain a responsible and constructive approach when considering candidates for the post of Secretary-General. The country expects to help increase the UN's efficiency, strengthen its authority and enhance its ability to respond to modern international challenges.

The Foreign Minister emphasized that the UN must adapt to the changing global environment and retain its key role in addressing global issues related to security, development and international cooperation.

During the meeting, Michelle Bachelet stated that the UN remains an indispensable platform for state interaction amid global challenges, noting that it must rely on its Charter and prioritize three main areas: peacekeeping, development and the protection of human rights.

The former Chilean President also expressed readiness to cooperate with China and other states, highly praising Beijing's contribution to developing multilateral cooperation and supporting UN activities.

The selection process for the new UN Secretary-General began at the end of 2025. The term of the current head of the organization, António Guterres, expires on December 31 this year. The Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council. The term of office is five years, with the possibility of re-election. By tradition, the candidate cannot represent any of the five permanent members of the Security Council: Russia, the United Kingdom, China, the United States or France.
