MANILA, July 11. /Dunyo IA/. Powerful Typhoon “Bavi,” one of the strongest storms in recent decades, has killed at least 15 people in the southern Philippines, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing the BBC.

Landslides triggered by heavy rains buried several families, while rescuers continued searching for dozens of people reported missing.

The storm, which reached about 1,000 kilometres in width, also brought heavy rainfall to parts of Taiwanese island, Japan and China. Taiwanese authorities warned of up to 1 metre of rainfall and placed around 29,000 military personnel on standby for emergency response operations.

Hundreds of flights were cancelled across the region due to the typhoon, schools suspended classes, and residents stocked up on food and essential supplies. In Japan, residents of remote islands reinforced homes and windows ahead of the storm.

The government of China warned of possible serious consequences from the typhoon after it made landfall along the country’s south-eastern coast. Experts noted that due to Bavi’s large size and strength, its remnants could affect northern regions.

Earlier, southern China was also affected by Typhoon “Maysak,” which killed at least 39 people, led to the evacuation of more than 130,000 residents and caused significant damage to agriculture.

At the time, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev expressed condolences to President Xi Jinping over the deaths and injuries caused by natural disasters in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, as well as a major fire in Fujian Province that killed 28 people.
