MASHHAD, July 10. /Dunyo IA/. Huge crowds gathered in the streets of the holy Iranian city of Mashhad to bid farewell to Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing the BBC.
A plane carrying the coffins of Ali Khamenei, his granddaughter, son-in-law, daughter, and daughter-in-law arrived in Mashhad from Iraq, where large-scale mourning processions had also taken place. Ali Khamenei was later laid to rest at the Shrine of Imam Reza, Iran’s holiest Shia Muslim site. The burial marked the end of six days of nationwide mourning ceremonies held in five cities across Iran and neighbouring Iraq.
The funeral took place after an exchange of strikes between Iran and the United States, which jeopardized a preliminary agreement to end the war during which Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed.
Following his death, his son Mojtaba Khamenei became the new Supreme Leader. He was reportedly seriously wounded in the same attack and has not appeared in public since. Other sons of the late leader represented the family during the mourning ceremonies in Iran.
It should be recalled that on July 3, an Uzbek delegation led by Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis Nuriddin Ismoilov joined delegations from dozens of countries in attending the farewell ceremonies in Tehran.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that American strikes could become “much stronger.” In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had carried out strikes against US military facilities in Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, Iraq, and Qatar.
Iran’s Ministry of Health reported that 14 people were killed and 78 others injured across five provinces.
Three weeks ago, the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding providing for a cessation of hostilities. However, on July 9, President Donald Trump stated that, in his view, the memorandum was “no longer in effect.”
