Kazakhstan wins its first Winter Olympic Gold since 1994

ASTANA, February 14. /Dunyo IA/. At the Olympic Games in Italy, Kazakh figure skater Mikhail Shaidorov claimed the gold medal in men’s singles skating, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing the international news agency “Kazinform”.
This marks the country’s first Winter Olympic gold in 32 years and Kazakhstan’s first-ever victory in men’s figure skating.
Following the short program, the skater held fifth place, trailing the leader by nearly ten points. However, in the free skate, he successfully performed five quadruple jumps and completed the program without a single fall. The judges highly praised both the technical execution and program components, allowing him to close the gap and secure first place overall.
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev congratulated Mikhail Shaidorov on winning the Winter Olympic title, thanking him for his supreme skill and will to win. The Head of State also decided to award Mikhail Shaidorov the Order of “Barys” II degree.
Mikhail Shaidorov is an Almaty-born figure skater, born in 2004. He began skating in his childhood, with his father, Stanislav Shaidorov, serving as his first coach. In 2025, he was a medalist at the World Championships.
It is noted that Mikhail’s sensational result at the Olympics is likely to boost public interest in figure skating among Kazakhstanis and provide a new impetus for the sport's development.
