Traditional Rishtan ceramics featured at cultural event in Japan

TOKYO, 23 July. /Dunyo IA/. A cultural event titled "The Art of Uzbekistan: Masterclass in Rishtan Ceramics" along with an exhibition of traditional ceramic works was held in Tokyo, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

The event took place at the Turkish Cultural Center and featured renowned potter Bakhtiyor Nazirov, a distinguished representative of the Rishtan school of ceramics. For several years, he has actively participated in pottery festivals in Japan, and in 2021 and 2022 held solo exhibitions at the Tsukamoto Gallery in the city of Mashiko.

The event was attended by Ambassador of Uzbekistan, Mukhsinkhuja Abdurakhmonov, leadership of the Turkish Cultural Center, as well as around 60 local and international guests.

During the masterclass, Bakhtiyor Nazirov gave a detailed overview of the history of Rishtan ceramics — one of the oldest and most recognized traditional crafts of Uzbekistan, with roots tracing back thousands of years. Over the centuries, local artisans have developed a distinctive ceramic style highly valued across Central Asia and global markets.

He highlighted the unique features of Rishtan ceramics, particularly the signature glaze technique and color palette passed down through generations as a closely guarded artisanal secret. The colors are derived from natural pigments, with cobalt blue, emerald green, red, brown, white, and cream being most commonly used

Bakhtiyor Nazirov also explained the application of alkaline glaze, which gives the ceramics their characteristic glossy, vibrant, and durable finish. This "alkaline ceramics" method is considered exclusive to Rishtan.

Rishtan ceramics are gaining growing attention today for their high artistic value, handcrafted quality, intricate patterns, and refined forms. It was noted that Uzbekistan is placing strong emphasis on supporting artisans, including preserving the ustoz–shogird (master–apprentice) system in Rishtan District. In 2021, the International Center for Ceramics Art was established to foster favorable conditions for local artisans.

During the workshop, participants engaged in the painting and decorating processes, learning about Rishtan's unique techniques and ornamental designs. The masterclass generated great interest among the Japanese audience, many of whom expressed appreciation for the meticulous craftsmanship involved. Attendees were able to take home their ceramic creations as keepsakes.

One of the guests, Inaba Hiromi, shared that she had visited Uzbekistan several years ago and was deeply impressed by the country’s culture, particularly the iconic blue ceramics of Rishtan. Upon hearing of Bakhtiyor Nazirov’s exhibition in Tokyo, she did not miss the opportunity to once again experience this exceptional art form.
