“The Diplomatic Insight”: Domestic reforms have strengthened confidence in Uzbekistan

ISLAMABAD, August 18. /Dunyo IA/. Pakistan’s “The Diplomatic Insight” portal has published an article by Muhammad Asif Noor, Executive Director of the Pakistan Institute of Peace and Diplomacy, titled “Uzbekistan’s New Horizon”, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

In his article, the author writes about the significant achievements attained by Uzbekistan ahead of the celebration of the 35th anniversary of the country’s independence, as well as the humane and people-oriented policy pursued by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

According to him, the territory of present-day Uzbekistan has long served as a global example in the fields of ideas, science, trade and governance. Under President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, these historical traditions are acquiring a contemporary political dimension. Uzbekistan is once again exerting influence far beyond its borders, this time through national reforms, regional trust and a new geography of connectivity.

“Uzbekistan’s leader’s approach to governance is reflected in three closely interconnected transformations: opening the state to its citizens, bringing the countries of Central Asia closer together, and reconnecting the region with the wider world. Domestic reforms have strengthened economic confidence in Uzbekistan. Improved relations with neighbouring states have ensured regional stability. Expanding transport and trade links are turning this stability into a shared opportunity”, - Asif Noor notes.

When Shavkat Mirziyoyev was elected President in 2016, Uzbekistan had strong institutions, a young population and vast potential. However, the economy still relied heavily on administrative management, while cross-border trade remained limited. The concept of New Uzbekistan changed the direction of governance, placing people-oriented governance, entrepreneurship, investment and social protection at the forefront of national policy.

“The results are substantial. In 2025, Uzbekistan’s gross domestic product exceeded USD 145 billion, exports reached USD 33.4 billion, while foreign investment amounted to more than USD 43 billion. The economy grew by 7.7 percent over the year, while annual growth of 8.7 percent was recorded in the first quarter of 2026. During 2025, the poverty rate fell from 8.9 to 5.8 percent, and nearly 1.5 million people were lifted out of poverty,” the article states.

The review also analyses the key achievements of the head of state in foreign policy and relations with Pakistan, particularly the outcomes of his state visit to Pakistan in February this year.

“New Uzbekistan is not seeking to recreate its past; rather, it is harmoniously combining the best of its historical experience with modern approaches to national development and regional prosperity”, - Asif Noor concludes.
