TASHKENT, January 3. /Dunyo IA/. In 2025, 128 journalists were killed worldwide, including 10 women, according to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), reports Dunyo IA correspondent.
The figures, reported by Deutsche Welle, include nine deaths caused by accidents. By comparison, IFJ recorded 122 journalist deaths in 2024, including 14 women. Anthony Bellanger, IFJ Secretary-General, said the rise “represents the highest level of alarm for journalists”.
The IFJ condemned the “continued failure of authorities to protect media workers” and called for “immediate and decisive action to end the cycle of violence and impunity in 2026”.
The Middle East and Arab-speaking countries were the deadliest regions, accounting for 58% of journalist killings. Conflict zones remain the most dangerous: in 2025, 13 journalists died in Yemen, 8 in Ukraine, and 6 in Sudan.
Since IFJ began tracking journalist deaths in 1990, a total of 3,173 media workers have been killed worldwide. Additionally, as of December 31, 2025, 533 journalists were imprisoned globally.
It is noted that IFJ statistics differ from those of other organizations. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reported 67 media worker deaths in 2025, while UNESCO cited 93 deaths during the same period.
