NEW YORK, July 27. /Dunyo IA/. The United Nations General Assembly has adopted the resolution “On Strengthening the Role of Parliaments in Accelerating Social Development” an initiative put forward by President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

Resolution was co-sponsored by 61 United Nations Member States representing all regions of the world, reflecting broad international support for Uzbekistan’s initiative to strengthen the role of parliaments in advancing the social development agenda and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During the consideration of the draft resolution, Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the United Nations Ulugbek Lapasov noted that the initiative to adopt the document had been put forward by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev as Uzbekistan’s contribution to advancing the global social development agenda and strengthening the parliamentary dimension of international cooperation.

Resolution underscores the pivotal role of parliaments in accelerating the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the improvement of national legislation, the strengthening of social protection systems, poverty reduction, the promotion of decent employment, expanded access to quality education and the advancement of social inclusion.

Resolution places particular emphasis on expanding the participation of women and young people in parliamentary activities, harnessing the opportunities created by digital transformation to advance social development, as well as strengthening international cooperation and supporting developing countries.

It also welcomes the convening of the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tashkent and the adoption of the Tashkent Declaration on Parliamentary Action for Social Development and Social Justice.

Resolution further calls on United Nations Member States to more actively engage parliaments in the implementation and monitoring of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including through the preparation of Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs), parliamentary oversight of the implementation of national commitments, and strengthened cooperation with civil society.

Resolution also encourages greater participation of parliamentarians in major United Nations events and calls for further strengthening of national statistical systems to improve the assessment of progress in social development.

Adoption of the resolution was preceded by extensive political and diplomatic efforts undertaken by the Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan to the United Nations. Throughout the negotiation process, a series of formal consultations and numerous bilateral meetings were held, making it possible to agree on a balanced text that reflects the principle of universality underlying United Nations documents while taking into account the interests of all Member States.

Adoption of the resolution serves as further evidence of the high international standing of the initiatives advanced by the President of Uzbekistan and the broad recognition of the country's contribution to promoting multilateral cooperation, social justice and sustainable development.

Document also reaffirms Uzbekistan's growing role in shaping global solutions within the framework of the United Nations and reflects the international community's commitment to strengthening parliamentary cooperation as an important instrument for achieving inclusive and sustainable development.
