BELGRADE, September 28. /Dunyo IA/. President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić has announced his resignation, saying he intends to take part in the snap parliamentary elections and seek the post of prime minister, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing “Balkan Insight.”

Aleksandar Vučić has served as president since 2017 and was re-elected in April 2022. His second term was due to end in mid-2027, but in August 2025 he announced plans to leave office early and later set September 27 as the date.

Earlier this month, he dissolved the National Assembly and called parliamentary elections for October 25. The ruling Serbian Progressive Party said he would head the “United Serbia” electoral list and seek the post of prime minister if the party wins.

Speaker of the National Assembly Ana Brnabić will serve as acting president.

Aleksandar Vučić’s resignation comes amid prolonged protests in Serbia that began after a canopy collapsed at the railway station in Novi Sad in November 2024, killing 16 people. Protesters have called for an investigation into the tragedy and stronger measures against corruption.

Under his rule, Serbia has continued negotiations on EU membership while maintaining close ties with Russia and China. Belgrade has also not joined EU sanctions against Russia, while relations with Kosovo remain one of the key issues in the country’s foreign policy.

On September 7-8, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited Belgrade, where, following talks with the President of Serbia, sides signed a Joint Declaration on the Establishment of Strategic Partnership Relations and a package of bilateral documents covering trade, transport, labor migration, investments and other areas.
