WASHINGTON-TEHRAN, August 21. /Dunyo IA/. The United States is preparing a new package of sanctions against Iran, which Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described as the “toughest in history,” reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing Reuters.
The U.S. is expected to present details of the new measures on August 24. Scott Bessent said stronger economic pressure could reduce the need to resume military operations. He also said Washington intends to increase economic pressure on and isolate the Iranian authorities.
A day earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump also warned of an unprecedented economic war against Iran. He said countries, financial institutions, companies and government entities providing Tehran with “any type of lifeline” would face serious economic consequences.
Iran condemned the U.S. measures, calling the sanctions “economic terrorism.” Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran must prepare to counter sanctions pressure and strengthen economic ties with other countries.
Earlier, an agreement reached between the United States and Iran provided for the restoration of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and negotiations on lifting sanctions and unfreezing Iranian assets. However, the deadline for reaching an agreement expired, and the negotiating process has effectively reached an impasse.
