SAMARKAND, September 4. /Dunyo IA/. In an exclusive interview with a correspondent of Dunyo IA, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Tulia Ackson shared her views on the significance of the 12th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians, being held in Samarkand under the theme “Reclaiming human rights, justice and dignity for all in turbulent times”, as well as on the initiatives of the President of Uzbekistan aimed at strengthening parliamentarism:
- Well, the importance of this conference is very significant. These two or three days that we are going to spend here in Samarkand, we are going to discuss human rights, but we are also going to discuss the dignity of people and, of course, peace. This is closely linked to the Assembly that we had in Tashkent last year. That was the Assembly of the IPU, while now we have the Young Members of Parliament, a group that is meeting at this conference.
Last year, when His Excellency, President of Uzbekistan, spoke about social policy and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, he highlighted issues that are still very relevant today. Now, as we meet here, we are actually amplifying that same voice that started here last year. We are very happy that representatives from different countries have gathered here to discuss issues related to youth.
However, those are not the only issues we are going to discuss. We are also going to discuss how technology is affecting young people entering politics, as well as youth participation in decision-making. Young people get bullied online and the use of artificial intelligence is also affecting them, sometimes negatively.
So, it is very important for us to be hosted here once again in Uzbekistan. We made history last year during the Assembly. So many declarations were adopted here, and some of them have made it to the United Nations. We are therefore very grateful, as the Inter-Parliamentary Union, that Uzbekistan offered itself for us to be here, and now we are here again at the invitation of Uzbekistan.
I think we all agree that the initiatives put forward by the President of Uzbekistan on the international stage are contributing to strengthening the country’s positive image. When people speak of Uzbekistan, many have positive impressions and fond memories of the country.
I think we all agree that the initiatives being taken by the President of Uzbekistan are placing Uzbekistan on the international arena in a very good way. Every person, when we talk about Uzbekistan, we are talking about good memories in a number of aspects.
Now, talking about the resolutions that were actually adopted at the United Nations, they are the result of initiatives by Uzbekistan, ensuring that issues that would normally not be talked about are now being discussed.
We are very pleased that Uzbekistan is taking on international leadership across a number of areas. One of them is the fact that these initiatives have led to the United Nations adopting resolutions. One of these resolutions talks about the close relationship between the government, or the executive, and the parliament, because parliamentarians are people's representatives.
It is about putting people at the center of the decisions that are being made, not just at the United Nations, but even in our own countries. So, I think we all agree that what the President of this country is doing at the international level is also being done here in Uzbekistan. That is a very good combination.
