Riyadh hosts discussions on strengthening cooperation between Uzbekistan and the Global Water Organization

RIYADH, June 15. /Dunyo IA/. Uzbek diplomats held a meeting with the Head of the Global Water Organization (GWO), Fahad bin Abdulrahman Balghunaim, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

During the negotiations, it was emphasized that water resource management has emerged as one of the most pressing priorities on the global agenda, as it is directly linked to environmental sustainability, public health, food security and sustainable economic development.

Head of the organization outlined the comprehensive reforms implemented by the Government of Saudi Arabia in this sector. It was noted that since the Kingdom is classified among the nations with highly limited water resources, special emphasis within the framework of the “Vision 2030” program is placed on water conservation, seawater desalination, wastewater treatment and the integration of advanced digital technologies.

Global Water Organization, which enjoys the broad support of nations worldwide, stands as the premier international entity specialized exclusively in water resource management. Its primary objective is centered on strengthening strategic partnerships among foreign governments, international organizations, financial institutions and research centers.

In turn, the Uzbek diplomats briefed their interlocutor on the reforms implemented in recent years under the leadership of the President of Uzbekistan to modernize water management and enhance water resource efficiency.

It was noted that the initiative of the Head of State to declare the years 2026–2036 as the “Decade of Practical Actions for the Rational Use of Water Resources in Central Asia” has received the full support of all founding states of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea.

Fahad Balghunaim commended the adoption of the new Water Code in Uzbekistan, as well as the consistent implementation of the Water Resource Management and Irrigation Sector Development Program for 2025–2028.

Furthermore, he highly appreciated the upcoming World Water Conservation Forum, scheduled to be held in Samarkand in September–October of this year, stating that the leadership of the Global Water Organization would be delighted to attend this prestigious event upon receiving an official invitation.

During the meeting, the Head of the GWO also expressed full readiness to establish close cooperation with the relevant ministries and agencies of Uzbekistan, exchange experience in mutually beneficial areas, and conduct joint scientific research.

Global Water Organization was officially established on September 4, 2023, at the initiative of the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud. As of May 2025, its charter has been signed by eight founding states: Greece, Kuwait, Mauritania, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Senegal and Spain.
