SAMARKAND, September 5. /Dunyo IA/. As part of the 12th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, a special open session on “Parliamentary Engagement in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals” was held today in Samarkand, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

The event brought together young parliamentarians from different countries, representatives of international organizations and experts. Participants discussed the role of parliaments in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the national level, improving legislation, strengthening parliamentary oversight and setting budget priorities.

The session was opened by Tanzila Narbayeva, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis and Co-Chair of the Parliamentary Commission on Monitoring the Implementation of National Sustainable Development Goals and Targets through 2030.

It was noted that Uzbekistan has achieved significant progress in implementing the SDGs in recent years. In particular, between 2021 and 2025, the poverty rate declined from 17 percent to 5.8 percent, while the unemployment rate fell from 10.5 percent to 5.1 percent between 2020 and 2025. The proportion of young people enrolled in higher education increased from 18.7 percent to 47.7 percent.

Particular attention during the session was paid to UN General Assembly resolutions adopted at the initiative of Uzbekistan and aimed at strengthening the role of parliaments in accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and advancing social development.

Participants also discussed the role of young parliamentarians in promoting the SDGs, mechanisms for interaction between parliaments and young people, expanding youth participation in political and social processes, and developing inter-parliamentary cooperation.

Following the open session, proposals were developed to support initiatives by young parliamentarians, promote the exchange of best practices, and apply effective parliamentary mechanisms to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
