International Air Transport Association opens permanent office in Tashkent amid rapid growth of Uzbekistan’s Aviation Sector

BRUSSELS, April 27. /Dunyo IA/. International Air Transport Association (IATA) has opened a permanent representative office in Tashkent and plans to launch the “Billing and Settlement Plan” (BSP) system in Uzbekistan by the end of the year, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing with reference to the Belgian publication “Travel Tomorrow”.

It is noted that this step has become an important milestone for the country's aviation industry, which seeks to strengthen its position as a key transport hub connecting Asia, Europe, and the Caucasus.

IATA Regional Vice President for Europe Rafael Schvartzman noted that Uzbekistan is becoming an increasingly significant market for passenger and cargo transportation. According to him, opening the office and implementing BSP will provide strategic support for the development of air connectivity by increasing safety and operational efficiency.

The BSP system is designed to simplify settlements between travel agencies and airlines, as well as to improve the financial infrastructure for ticket sales. It will enhance transaction efficiency and expand access to international distribution channels.

IATA emphasized that the new office will ensure closer cooperation with airlines, airports, and government authorities on the implementation of international safety and operational standards.

Association notes that in recent years, Uzbekistan has been actively developing its transport and tourism infrastructure, positioning itself as a modern hub on the Great Silk Road routes. Earlier, plans were reported to welcome 12 million foreign tourists in 2026 and to increase this figure to 20 million by 2030.

IATA forecasts that passenger air traffic in Uzbekistan will grow at a rate of 3.3% between 2024 and 2050, which is above the global average. Among the key priorities for the industry's development, the organization highlights compliance with international standards, infrastructure development and the transition to sustainable energy solutions.

It was specifically noted that the modernization of airports in Tashkent, Bukhara and Urgench continues, alongside the development of the cargo hub in Navoi. In 2023, 66.6 thousand tons of cargo were transported through Uzbekistan's airports.

According to IATA estimates, the aviation industry already contributes USD 795.5 million to Uzbekistan's economy and supports approximately 128,000 jobs. Tourism associated with air travel generates significant additional income for the country's economy.

It is also noted that Uzbekistan has potential in the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which could contribute to reducing carbon emissions and creating new export opportunities.
