Scandinavian countries preserve books and artifacts from the Timurid era

STOCKHOLM, March 6. /Dunyo IA/. Diplomats from the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Sweden examined books, manuscripts and exhibits related to the art, architecture, and miniature painting of the era of Amir Timur and the Timurids, preserved in Scandinavian countries, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

According to the results of the study, the library of Uppsala University preserves 15th-century manuscripts produced in the major cultural centers of Transoxiana and Khorasan. Nizami Ganjavi's ”Khamsa”: A copy of this work, transcribed in 1439 during the reign of Shahrukh Mirza. The library also holds manuscript copies of works by Alisher Navoi, as well as other texts in Chagatai and Persian.

The library’s collection was formed over several centuries through acquisitions made by Swedish scholars and diplomats. Today, its catalogs include not only literary works but also scholarly texts of historical and theological nature from the Timurid period. These documents are accessible to researchers and integrated into the university’s unified system for cataloguing Oriental collections.

At the library of another Swedish higher education institution - Lund University - historical works created in the late 15th century can also be found. In particular, the library holds a manuscript of ”Khulasat al-Akhbar”, written in 1494 by the historian Khondamir. This work was produced in Herat during the reign of Sultan Husayn Bayqara and systematically presents historical events, including the period of Timurid dynasty.

In addition to historical works, the library preserves examples of classical poetry created in accordance with the artistic traditions of the Timurid era. These materials confirm the interest of Swedish scholarly circles in the intellectual heritage of the region. The items are included in specialized registers of Oriental manuscripts.

The collection of the David Collection also includes examples of applied arts from the Timurid period. The holdings feature jade objects as well as 14th-15th century metalware decorated with ornamentation and inlay. These exhibits demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship in Samarkand and Herat.

In addition, the collection contains individual miniature leaves and manuscript fragments associated with the Herat school of painting. The museum considers these exhibits an integral part of Islamic cultural heritage. The preserved 14th-15th century items in Denmark illustrate the wide dissemination of Timurid-era art beyond Central Asia.

The National Museum of Denmark also houses examples of material culture from the era of Amir Timur. These primarily include ceramic objects characteristic of 15th-century Transoxiana, as well as decorative items made of copper alloys. The exhibits entered the museum’s collection at different times and are documented as examples of medieval Eastern art.

The museum also preserves textile fragments and elements of everyday objects dating to the Timurid period. These items are part of the museum’s permanent holdings and are displayed in exhibitions dedicated to the history of the Islamic world and the Great Silk Road.
