TASHKENT, December 27. /Dunyo IA/. For the first time in history, Tashkent hosted a session of the CIS Member States Commission on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

According to the press service of the CIS Executive Committee, the 26th session of the Commission brought together representatives from sectoral ministries and agencies, safety regulatory bodies and relevant organizations from Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, alongside members of the CIS Executive Committee.

The opening remarks were delivered by Nozim Muksinov, Deputy Director of the Uzbek Agency for the Development of Nuclear Energy “Uzatom” under the Cabinet of Ministers and Azamat Mambetov, First Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic.

A welcoming address was also given by Ilkhom Ne’matov, Deputy Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). In his speech, he emphasized that, under the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and following detailed analytical studies, Uzbekistan decided to construct a nuclear power plant to ensure sustainable electricity supply for the population and the country’s rapidly growing economy. Construction and installation works for the first reactor commenced on 15 April 2025 at the designated site.

Ne’matov expressed confidence that the commissioning of the nuclear power plant in the Jizzakh region will not only enhance the stability of Uzbekistan’s energy system, but also create new jobs, conserve natural gas, and address environmental issues by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

He further stressed the CIS Executive Committee’s commitment to promoting the peaceful use of atomic energy, underlining the strategic importance of the Commission’s activities. He assured participants of continued support in establishing business contacts and fostering conditions conducive to deeper cooperation for the benefit of the CIS member states’ economies.

During the session, participants reviewed key documents and issues aimed at strengthening cooperation among CIS states in the field of peaceful nuclear technologies.

The session endorsed the Kazakhstan Materials Tokamak Research Program for 2027–2029, aimed at advancing collaboration in plasma physics and controlled thermonuclear fusion technologies.

The final report on the Interstate Target Program "Reclamation of Territories Affected by Uranium Mining Operations" was approved by the Commission of the Member States of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) on the Use of Atomic Energy for Peaceful Purposes. The program is aimed at ensuring radiation safety and remediating former uranium mining sites in the region.

Participants supported Rosatom’s proposed program for additional training of faculty at specialized universities across CIS member states.

The session paid particular attention to knowledge exchange in isotope production and the application of energy storage systems in transportation, urban energy infrastructure, and ecosystems.

Kazakhstan is hosting the major Kazatomexpo 2026 nuclear energy exhibition in October 2026 and plays a key role in UN NPT Preparatory Committees for the 2026 Review Conference, leading sessions and promoting cooperation, suggesting active involvement in peaceful atomic energy discussions.
