Diplomatic efforts secure safe repatriation of one-year-old Uzbek child

MUSCAT, December 25. /Dunyo IA/. The child of a citizen of Uzbekistan, N.P., who was born in Oman and lived in a family of Syrian refugees, has been returned to Uzbekistan, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

The child, born in 2023 to an Uzbek national, N.P., was left in Oman when the mother fled the country following a criminal case against her. N.P. entered Uzbekistan illegally, while her new born remained with the Syrian refugee family, who cared for the child as their own. N.P., who fled Oman in 2023, was arrested in Uzbekistan in 2024 for unrelated offenses and is currently serving her sentence.

As the host family decided to return to Syria, the child was handed over to representatives of the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Oman. Following extended negotiations with the relevant Omani authorities, diplomats ensured the child’s official registration. A birth certificate was issued on December 15 and on December 18, the child was returned to Uzbekistan under the supervision of an embassy official and handed over to N.P.’s spouse.

Authorities emphasized that this case underscores Uzbekistan’s unwavering commitment to protecting the rights and interests of its citizens, particularly minors. The government maintains constant attention to the welfare of its citizens abroad, regardless of their circumstances or location.
