MOSCOW, May 15. /Dunyo IA/. Uzbekistan aims to transform its energy sector from a constraining factor into one of the country’s key competitive advantages through large-scale investment, increased power generation capacity and the development of green energy, according to the Russian analytical publication “Ritm Evrazii”, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.
Uzbekistan Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev announced at the 2026 Uzbekistan Energy Week in Tashkent that 35 billion dollars in direct investments have been secured to commission 9 GW of new capacity. Power generation in the country has increased by nearly 40%.
It was stated that the total installed generation capacity reached almost 26 GW, while the volume of electricity production grew from 60 to 85 billion kWh. The capacity of solar and wind energy exceeded 5.5 GW, and together with hydropower, the share of clean generation in the energy mix amounted to about 30%.
"This is a major shift. We are no longer just thinking about the energy transition – we are building it," the publication quotes Jamshid Khodjaev as saying.
It is also reported that over 69,000 km of power grids and around 14,000 substations have been modernized in the country. The volume of domestic goods and services in the energy sector exceeded USD 700 million, with a growth potential of up to USD 1.3 billion.
The development of international cooperation in the energy sector is highlighted separately. Uzbekistan is strengthening its role as Central Asia's energy hub and is participating in the “green corridor” project with Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan to export electricity to Europe.
According to the strategy until 2035, electricity consumption in the country will grow to 123 billion kWh, while generation will increase by 34 GW. It is also emphasized that Uzbekistan, which previously imported electricity, now supplies it to Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan.
