DELHI, February 6. /Dunyo IA/. Artisans from Uzbekistan have once again taken a prominent part in the large-scale international festival and fair “Surajkund International Craft Mela-2026”, held in the Indian state of Haryana, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.
This large-scale event is widely regarded as the world’s largest exhibition of handicrafts and cultural heritage.
This year, the fair brought together participants from over 50 countries under the theme “From Local to Global”. The concept aims to give international recognition to the traditional arts of local artisans and to integrate their heritage into the global market.
The theme resonates strongly with the mission of Uzbek artisans, whose goal is to bring their unique traditional crafts from regional contexts onto the global stage and secure international acclaim.
“Surajkund Mela” serves as a living encyclopaedia of handicrafts, showcasing the incredible richness and diversity of global weaving, ceramics, carving, jewellery and other applied arts. Beyond the trade stalls and exhibitions, the programme features performances by folklore ensembles and music-and-dance groups from around the world.
Uzbekistan has been an active and eagerly anticipated participant in the fair for many years. The country’s pavilions consistently rank among the most visited, drawing thousands of visitors.
- We participate in the “Surajkund Mela” every year, - says Nilufar Musajonova, a master of traditional Uzbek embroidery. - The people of India, as well as fair participants and visitors, show great interest in our embroidery samples, dolls, bags and other handcrafted items. I therefore encourage my fellow artisans to take an active part in this event.
Interest in the works of Uzbek artisans - including suzani embroidery, ceramics, tubeteikas, jewellery and other crafts - remains strong. This is a direct testament to the high quality and artistic value of the country’s national heritage.
Participation in the “Surajkund Mela” offers the best possible opportunity to showcase achievements to a global audience of millions. The fair also facilitates cultural dialogue and the direct exchange of knowledge and techniques with colleagues from around the world.
- We prepare for this fair throughout the year, - says Hasanboy Khodjimatov, a master artisan from Margilan. Colleagues from around the world come here, allowing us to exchange experiences and build friendly relationships. Representatives from various countries specifically visit our pavilion, showing interest in our bekasama jackets and other products.
The fair helps establish direct business partnerships, expand exports to the Indian market and beyond and stimulate foreign tourist interest in Uzbekistan.
Participation in a global forum such as the “Surajkund Mela” not only strengthens cultural ties between Uzbekistan and India but also affirms the high standing of Uzbek applied arts on the international stage.
