United Nations General Assembly declares 2028 - International Year of International Law

TASHKENT, July 28. /Dunyo IA/. The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution proclaiming 2028 as the International Year of International Law, thereby reaffirming the importance of international law in maintaining peace and security, strengthening multilateral cooperation and promoting friendly relations among states, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.

Resolution emphasizes that respect for and compliance with international law are essential conditions for ensuring the effectiveness, predictability, and legitimacy of the contemporary international system. It calls upon Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, and other relevant stakeholders to organize appropriate educational, scientific, and awareness-raising activities throughout 2028.

Resolution also encourages the peaceful settlement of disputes, the development of international legal cooperation, and the improvement of legal education. Particular attention is given to engaging young people, academic community, legal professionals and civil society institutions in promoting international law.

General Assembly welcomed the proposal of Turkmenistan to convene the Global Forum on International Law in December 2028. The Forum will serve as the central event of the International Year and bring together Member States, entities of the United Nations system, international organizations, academic community and civil society.

Proclamation of the International Year builds upon the Organization’s longstanding efforts to promote the teaching and study of international law, including through the implementation of the United Nations Programme of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law and the work of the International Law Commission.
