Turkmenistan Assumes CIS Chairmanship from January

TASHKENT, January 5. /"Dunyo" IA/. As of January 1, 2026, the chairmanship of the governing bodies of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has passed from Tajikistan to Turkmenistan, "Dunyo" IA's correspondent reports.
According to the press service of the CIS Executive Committee, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov previously stated that Ashgabat intends to contribute to the most effective utilization of the CIS’s full potential. He emphasized that Turkmenistan regards the chairmanship as a manifestation of respect and trust from the CIS member states, as well as а recognition of the country’s contribution to the development of the Commonwealth.
The President also noted that Turkmenistan plans to elaborate a concept for its CIS chairmanship, which will define key priorities and approaches to further strengthening intergovernmental cooperation, taking into account current challenges and needs.
Turkmenistan holds the status of an associate member of the CIS. The country last chaired the Commonwealth’s bodies in 2019.
