Central Asia seeks new solutions to water scarcity

SEOUL, May 6. /Dunyo IA/. Uzbekistan is strengthening its water diplomacy and promoting regional cooperation in Central Asia amid large-scale domestic reforms in the water sector, reports Dunyo IA correspondent, citing with reference to the South Korean magazine “Diplomacy Journal”.
In the face of growing water scarcity, the country is implementing a comprehensive modernization of the sector, including the introduction of water-saving technologies, digitalization of management, and infrastructure renewal. In recent years, the land area utilizing such technologies has exceeded 2.6 million hectares, and an annual saving of up to 15 billion cubic meters of water is expected by 2030.
In parallel, Tashkent is actively developing international cooperation. A key focus has been the ecological rehabilitation of the Aral Sea region, where new reservoirs and forest plantations covering nearly 2 million hectares have been established. The network of protected natural areas is expanding, contributing to ecosystem restoration.
Uzbekistan is also promoting the joint management of transboundary water resources with neighboring countries, including projects involving reservoirs and hydropower. Particular attention is being paid to establishing a dialogue with Afghanistan through data exchange and the creation of expert platforms.
The magazine emphasizes that water diplomacy is becoming an essential tool for ensuring sustainable development and stability throughout the Central Asian region.
